Steel, aluminum, wood, paracord, rope, reclaimed cymbal, adjustable headband.

This piece is interactive; in these photos, I am the one interacting with the contraption, but normally it would be empty for others to interact with freely. Viewers are invited to “make some noise”; the array of cymbals, wind chimes, and hidden bells hanging from the device (along with the supplied sticks) facilitate this. My hope was that viewers would eventually step inside the cage, playing it from the center — being forced to put on a performance, while others around could observe. This method of interaction is (deliberately) ambiguous, with the only indication being the headband hanging in the center. Most viewers (at least ones I was able to observe) stood on the outside of the square while making noise.

Here, the piece is on display as part of my capstone show at Brown University’s List Art Center.
